Bits of Blue

It's safe to say that this outfit is a combination of Christmas gifts. It was a rather navy-filled Christmas this year and I must say I loved it. With the Christmas season (sadly) over, January is quickly approaching. Blues are a favorite of mine during this time of year because of their versatility. They are so easy to transition into any season and navy is undoubtedly one of my favorite colors to wear.

This vest is one I have seen and loved on many and I was so happy to have opened it on Christmas morning. There is no doubt that I have a vest obsession and I am excited to add this one to my collection! This Old Navy green sweater is soft, comfortable, and adds just the right touch of color to my outfit. It pairs perfectly with the chambray Vineyard Vines oxford, which is so soft. Keeping it relatively simple, I wore jeans with these fun J. Crew tartan tassel smoking slippers.

Thank you, Katie, for the pictures!

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year's Eve!

What colors do you like to wear during the wintertime?

Duck Hunting

This outfit was a bit different for me. Normally, I like to layer complimentary colors.  For this outfit I started with a monochromatic base and layered color on top.

This scarf was the perfect touch of Christmas for a rainy and cold winter day. The trench coat added an extra layer which was much needed over a simple knit black top. Keeping it comfy, I turned to leggings and wore my black Hunter rain boots to keep my feet warm and dry.

While it was a bit unusual for me to wear so many dark colors, I really loved the way this outfit looked and felt. Comfy, cute, and casual was perfect for the week before break and the pop of color was perfect for Christmastime.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas!

What is your rainy day go-to outfit?

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas Eve everyone! I have been spending lots of time with family watching Christmas movies and baking the past few days. I cannot believe how quickly this Christmas season went.

This Gap dress has been my go-to this December. It is so easy to dress up or down and looks so classy with simple jewelry and heels. I love this look and there was no question what I would be wearing for Christmas dinner. This Kate Spade for Gap belt is the perfect touch of Christmas and my obsession with bows is evident between the belt and the bangle. My pearl necklace is such a staple and I have been wearing it with so many outfits.

What are you wearing this Christmas?

I hope you all have a very merry Christmas!

Wrapped Up In Winter

Snow is one of my favorite aspects about Christmastime. While so many I know dislike wintertime, I cannot help but love this time of year. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas with the lights, snow, and holiday cheer, I find myself more excited each November when snow begins and Christmas music is played.

While I am not a huge fan of chilly temperatures, I thoroughly enjoy dressing for them. There are so many jackets and coats to chose from and so many ways to accessorize them. One of my favorite ways to add a little touch to a jacket is a scarf. They are perfect for keeping me warm.  This year I have found the amount of different scarves in existence is plentiful. I fell in love with this knockoff blanket scarf at Target and have been wearing it all the time. Between the temperature and the festive plaid, it adds the best touch to so many outfits. Plus, the price couldn't be better.

Oh, and on my list of reasons I love this time of year, I forgot to mention peppermint hot chocolate from Starbucks. This drink is great for keeping warm and the holiday taste is my favorite!

What is your go-to winter scarf?

Christmastime in the City

Christmas in Chicago. These three words automatically bring a smile to my face. I really can't express my love for the city and all the Christmastime festivities that come around this time of year.

Living fairly close to the city my family has been able to develop a few holiday traditions downtown. My personal favorite is eating by the Christmas tree at Macy's or for true Chicagoans Marshall Field’s on State Street. (Sorry Macy’s I know the name changed year’s ago, but it just part of the vernacular.) Each year the tree is decorated differently and my family always makes it a priority to visit every Christmastime.

On Friday, we went downtown and were seated right next to the tree. We really couldn't have been closer. This year the tree changed colors every few minutes. There were blue, red, and green stages and each had a specific theme. During each stage an image was projected on the ceiling.  I heard someone describe it as being more than a tree, but rather a light show. It couldn't have been any prettier. Unfortunately, you had to catch the lights at the right moment to get the perfect picture.  So, in all my pictures with the tree behind me, the tree was dark.

If you get the chance to eat at The Walnut a Room in Macy's during Christmastime any year, I highly suggest you take the opportunity. It is such a fun experience and a great way to get in the Christmas spirit! I suggest the famous pot pie -- a tradition since 1905. I get it every year and it is so tasty!

Do you have any family traditions at Christmastime?

Turkey Calls for Big Skirts

I LOVE dresses with big skirts. They are so fun and have such class. When I saw this dress at Gap in late October, I completely fell in love. The black and gold stripes are perfect for the holiday season and I completely loved the skirt. With black tights and heels, I knew it would be a great dress to have for the wintertime.

I was thankful that this dress arrived when it did because it was just in time for Thanksgiving. It was SO comfortable and fun and didn't need many accessories. I added my gold bow Kate Spade bangle and simple earrings. Not to mention it has pockets. What could be better?

Huge thank you to my cousin, Katie, for the pictures!

What did you wear for Thanksgiving?

Stepping into Winter with Our Vest Foot Forward: Collaboration with North Prepster

Today I am styling my go-to holiday vest outfit with Riley from Northern Prepster! Riley is so sweet and has the cutest style. Make sure to check out her outfit on her blog and follow her on Instagram ( @northprepster)!

Vest weather is the best weather. They add the perfect touch to make outfits a bit more wintery and make layering such fun. This deep red colored vest is often worn because of the beautiful Christmasy color and the weight. I am 100% convinced J. Crew vests are the best weight! I styled the vest with the cutest gray printed sweater from Gap. I am looking forward to wearing it throughout the holiday season because of how easy it is to dress it up or down. Pearls were are always a go-to because of their timelessness and this layered necklace was the perfect touch. On bottom, I wore leggings and Hunter boots because of the snow that day.

This outfit is perfect for holiday festivities and is great for keeping warm on snowy days!

Don't forget to see how Riley styled her adorable vest from J. Crew, too!

How do you style your vest during the winter?

Spread Some Cheer: Holiday Cards for Heroes

I am so blessed to live in this country. Seriously, over the past few days at various places I have been where veterans have been asked to stand and be recognized, I have realized how many in my own community have protected my freedom. With Veterans Day yesterday and the holiday season just around the corner, I wanted to say thank you to our veterans and service members in a way that would make someone smile.

In years past, I have helped with a project called Holiday Mail for Heroes through the Red Cross. With so many service men and women away from home during the holiday season, the Red Cross offers this program so people can “Give Something That Means Something.”  Individuals are asked to write cards to say thanks, and provide encouragement to members of our military, veterans and families of military personnel. Because these cards are delivered close to the holidays, card writers are encouraged to wish these wonderful people “happy holidays.”

While I haven’t made it a priority before, I decided that the simplest holiday card could mean so much to someone away from home. I bought a large stack of holiday cards and asked my teammates, friends, classmates, and family members to write a card or two for someone who might need a little extra holiday cheer this year. I am overwhelmed by everyone’s willingness to write a card and I am filled with joy that so many people can brighten the day of someone who makes such a difference for our country.

I really encourage you to participate in this amazing program. How can you help? It’s SO easy. You can buy holiday cards or make your own. Ask people in your life to write a card and take them in to a Red Cross office in your area. Oh and one important note, while it goes without saying glitter is a fun festive addition, they do ask that your card does not have any because some cards will go to military personnel in hospitals. Make sure you take your cards in within the next couple of weeks to make sure they will be delivered close to the holidays. No matter how many cards you contribute, each one makes an important difference!

Happy Birthday Lilly Pulitzer

Lilly Pulitzer. To many, she is the creator of a brand that projects classic, colorful style. However, to me, Lilly was a lady who knew what being happy was, and she put her happiness into the clothes she created. Her timeless quotes parallel the style in which she unintentionally initially created. Every so often, I open my planner to the front page and read her story. It's a simple reminder that something huge can come out of something so little, and unintentional actions can make such a change. Her company encompasses the idea that everyday can be a party, and a little pink makes all the difference.

Today, I am celebrating her birthday in a simple way. Just how her creation of her first shift dress was simple. I kept my outfit relatively simple with a pop of color, perfect for hiding any juice stains. While this scarf isn't necessarily in season, it is one of my favorite prints as it incorporates so many colors and simply makes me happy. Lilly said it best, "Being happy never goes out of style."

As for the rest of my outfit, I paired the scarf with a thick cream cable-knit sweater and this Lands End coat. Both are perfect for the fall and wintertime and keep me warm outside. These jeans are super comfy and I am in love with the color for this time of year. I wore my Hunters as I took these pictures on a bit of a rainy day. The coat and scarf were the perfect pop of color against the gloomy
sky.

Today is not only about celebrating Lilly, but celebrating what she encouraged everyone to do -- to enjoy life, be happy, and never forget a little pink and green!

How are you celebrating Lilly's birthday?

Kathleen

Casual but Cute

Comfort is key when I'm trying to pick an outfit. While I try not to dress down too much to school, some days after a late night it is necessary to thrown on more casual attire.
This is such a perfect casual but cute outfit for school. I think the next most comfortable items in my closet are pajamas. The spirit jersey is basically a lightweight sweatshirt which is perfect. For a chilly school or hot day outdoors, this outfit works. These Lauren James shorties are so fun and so soft. They are great for sitting all day.

Do you have a go to casual outfit?

Trip to Vineyard Vines

I absolutely love Vineyard Vines.  A few stores I shop carry a small inventory of the whale-appointed clothes.  So an entire store filled with Vineyard Vines clothes sounds like a wonderland.  Until last fall when Shep and Ian opened a pop-up location, that experience wasn’t available in Chicago.  In the spring, a friend and I took the train downtown and went the Vineyard Vines store on Michigan Avenue!  We walked in the door…instance happiness.  So many different bright colors and preppy styles, not on my iPad screen or a catalog page, but right in front of me.

We went just a couple weeks before the Kentucky Derby and I loved seeing their adorable collection for the Derby.  There were so many cute items in the collection.  Dresses, shirts, scarves, just what you would need to be perfectly dressed for a Derby celebration!

I live in my vintage whale pocket tee and fell in love with all the different colors the store had available.  Decisions, decisions.  In the end, I selected a classic navy long-sleeved pocket tee with a pink whale on the back for my preppy cousin.  My friend and I both also purchased whale coozies.  They are just too cute.  The store gave us a special treat--the large foam whale hats that I see on Pinterest all the time.  I was so excited to get my own!

We happily wore our whaley fun new hats as we walked to Pizzeria Uno to eat some delicious classic Chicago deep dish pizza.  The looks we received were fantastic and so many people asked us where the store was located. We even had someone ask us if they could borrow a hat to take a picture.  Once at the restaurant, we, of course, used our coozies.

Sadly on May 26, Vineyard Vines closed their Chicago location.  But good things come to those who wait, a location is set to open in spring of 2015.  The new flagship store will be located at 940 N. Michigan Avenue and will be one of the largest Vineyard Vines retail locations.  It will be more than twice the size of the Vineyard Vines Chicago store.  I have a feeling this new store will be whaley amazing.  Can spring come any sooner?!

Have you ever been to a Vineyard Vines store?

Kathleen

School Bag Organization

As the summer slowly but surely comes to an end, I thought I would share how I organized my school bag last year. Ultimately, everyone has to organize their school bag in the way that works best for them, however I thought it may be helpful to some if I shared how I organize my own bag. Remember, the best way to succeed is to do whatever works best for you!

To begin with, I use a large, black Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag for my school bag. This bag is honestly my Mary Poppins bag. It fits everything. No matter how heavy the homework load is, I can almost always fit everything in there. In my bag, I carry two folders, one I use to keep my homework for my morning classes and one to keep my homework for my afternoon classes. I also keep a notebook, book, Lilly Pulitzer agenda, iPad, and Vera Bradley makeup bag containing pencils, pens, highlighters, and a calculator.
I have learned that using one folder for morning homework and one folder for my afternoon homework is what works best for me. I have folders for my individual classes that contain any worksheets and notes I will not need for that night’s homework. If I think I may need it for my homework, I put it in my homework folder. This is how I feel organized because all my notes and worksheets don’t get mixed together and it makes things easier to find.

The notebook in my bag is a Vera Bradley composition notebook that I use to write down any blog post ideas I have during school, any random notes for class if I don’t have a notebook for that class with me, or anything else that I need it for during the day. It is easier to write things down as they pop in my head then to forget them and frustrate myself later! I keep track of my assignments in a Lilly Pulitzer agenda. There is so much room to write everything down and I have found it very, very useful! My iPad is for my school classes and I take it everywhere. I really enjoyed having it last year. As I said earlier, I use a Vera Bradley makeup bag to hold my pencils, pens, post-its, and everything else that is too small to lay by itself in my bag. I have the medium sized makeup bag and it fits everything I need.

Again, it’s most important to organize your bag in the way that works best for you! I organized my bag in this way last year and I plan on doing the same for this year. Organization, as I have learned, is extremely key in school and I am glad I have finally found what works best for me!

How do you organize your school bag?

Kathleen

My Plane & Car Ride Necessities

Vacation season is upon us! It feels as though everyone I know is traveling during the month of August to try to get a little more summer fun in before school starts. Whether you are driving or flying, there are a few items that are really great to have to help pass the time!

1. Book-When I have to sit for hours and can't get anything done, reading is a great thing to do! Time for summer reading is quickly coming to end so reading on my way to vacation is a perfect time. I just started Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Have you read it?

2. Agenda-Another productive yet low-key activity is working on your agenda. Now that it is August, it is a perfect time to put those dates on the calendar!

3. Coffee-Great for early morning or late night trips. A little caffeine can be much needed after hectic packing or for when I reach your destination!

4. Sweater/Sweatshirt-Planes are always cold. I seem to always need a sweater and if I don't end up needing it, it can easily serve as a pillow or blanket!

What are your travel necessities?

Kathleen

My Five Most Used Apps

Happy Friday! I cannot believe it is already August! How did that happen? This summer is flying by.

Today I thought I would share the apps on my phone that I use on a daily basis. Other than messages, phone, and email, these are the ones I most oftenly use. All of these apps are fun to use and I love having them on my phone.

1. Instagram- I love Instagram. I find it so fun to post pictures and follow other people. It's a great way to connect with people all over. I also love taking pictures and enjoy sharing them!

2. Pinterest- To say that I have a slight addiction with Pinterest is an understatement. I go on it at least once a day. There are so many great ideas and I like how you can pin things and always have them to come back to later.

3. Bloglovin'- This app is seriously great. I love being able to follow all the blogs I read and have them all in the same place. It makes reading blogs a quicker experience and I always make time to go on it to read the newest blog posts.

4. My Fitness Pal - I recently tried this app out and I really like it! It really helps me monitor what I am eating and shows me if I need to eat more or less of a certain type of food.

5. Twitter- Probably the best place to hear about sales and giveaways from my favorite stores. Although I do check my email, I probably check Twitter more often throughout the day. It's also a great way to hear when some of my favorite bloggers have recently posted!

What are the apps you use on a daily basis? I would love to hear!

Kathleen

Planning Ahead

As much as I dread seeing those back to school commercials and ads, I am excited for school to start so I can begin using my Lilly Pulitzer agenda! All of Lilly's agendas this year are incredibly cute which made it extremely hard to choose just one!

I chose to go with Jellies Be Jammin'. The color combination of the blue and pink is perfect. I love the way my monogram turned out on the front. I picked a large agenda, which will be the perfect size for planning out future blog posts and school assignments!

Did you get a Lilly agenda this year? Which one did you get?

XOXO,
Kathleeen
