Dressing for the Chicago Tropics

The snow has returned! After a week or so with dirty snow barely covering the ground, we got a snowfall here earlier this week. While last time it was uber chilly (-40°s...) when it snowed, it's a bit warmer here this time, which means a few less layers but still bundled.

I think I will always be a fan of the J. Crew Herringbone vest. It goes with so many of what I would consider to be the basics during the winter, making it so easy to wear on the coldest of days. I always try to play with patterns a bit and this J. Crew tee shirt is the perfect thick tee shirt for winter. This Kate Spade hat is also a go-to (so warm). I was searching for a good hat to wear, and I love this one!

How do you dress for warmer winter days?

When Winter Beats Me

Temperatures are changing daily here. One day the temperatures are in the negative numbers, and the next it's 40 degrees. This constant change in temperatures made me sick recently and, unfortunately, I know this has been true for many people as well. So, I thought I would share how I try to make a day of feeling miserable somewhat enjoyable and relaxing.

1. Netflix
On days when you do not feel well enough to do much of anything a little entertainment is always a good idea.  Even though I finished all six seasons, I love watching some of my favorite episodes of Gossip Girl. It always makes me smile no matter how I feel. If you've never watched Gossip Girl, I highly recommend it. If I'm up for a movie, you'll probably find me curled up watching an Audrey movie. On most days, I do not have time to watch much TV,  so it's incredibly relaxing to just sit and watch a show (or five...).

2. Reading Blog Posts and Writing Blog Ideas
A day home is a great chance to catch up on blogs that I haven’t had a chance to read with my busy schedule. Many of my favorite bloggers post on a daily basis, so there is always something new to read on my Bloglovin' feed. I also start thinking of ideas and making a list for my own blog.

3. Take a Hot Shower
Long, hot showers that involve great smelling soap are so nice. For me, they are so relaxing and when you are not feeling well can sooth your aches and pains.  Plus, if my sinuses are really hurting, the heat/steam helps clear them, making me feel better, too. And, when I get out, using a great lotion to moisturize my dry skin (thanks winter...) also helps me get  rid of some of the icky feeling that being sick brings.

4. Reading
Along with catching up with blogs, I spend time reading my independent reading book for school. During the week it can be difficult with plenty of other schoolwork to find time to read, so reading my book on a day off let’s me get ahead for the next few days. One less thing to worry about with the makeup work!

Eat well and exercise often to try and stay healthy!  But, if you do get sick, I'd love to hear how you relax on a sick day.

Warm & Toasty Scarf

On Saturday, my dad suggested out of the blue that we head to Lincoln Park for lunch (perks of living driving distance to the city of Chicago!). It was a warmer winter day--no need for the heavy layers. So I pulled on a sweater, my peacoat and, of course, a fun scarf and was good to go.

love scarves. They can make an outfit feel so much more put together.  They add that extra layer of warmth on the coldest of days.  And there are so many different styles and colors of scarves that the variety is endless.

When Carly from The College Prepster wrote a post wearing this navy and cream colored gingham scarf in the fall, I immediately added it to my Christmas list. It looked so soft and comfortable and if Carly loved it, I was sure I would too! When I opened it on Christmas morning, I was one happy girl.

Since Christmas, it's made quite a few appearances on my Instagram account and I have received comments on every picture it was included in. There is no denying it that the colors and print are so cute.  While it is no longer available at the Gap, you can still find many similar and fun scarves there, plus lots are on sale.

When you wear the same scarf as Carly from TCP, you have to do the same pose when taking blog pictures, right?!

Do you have a go to scarf?

The Liebster Award

I was so honored to be nominated for the Liebster Award by the oh-so-sweet Mikayla from A Seersucker State of Mind and Olivia from NC Prepsters. The Liebster Award is designed to recognize new bloggers and bloggers whose blog is still growing. One of my favorite things about blogging is the community, and this award is such a wonderful way to expand the community and recognize new and up and coming bloggers!

How it works:
1.) Include in your post which blogger nominated you.
2.) Answer the questions asked by the blogger who nominated you.
3.) Nominate eleven other bloggers who have less than 200 followers to help them expand their audience.
4.) Ask eleven questions to the bloggers you nominate.
5.) Notify the bloggers you nominated via social media.

Onto my answers!
Note: Although I was nominated by two bloggers and asked 20 different questions, I only answered the first set of questions I received.

1.) What is your blog's name? Is there a story behind it?
My blog's name is Let's Get Preppy. As for how I chose it, there's no specific story. I knew I wanted to encompass my preppy style in my blog, so that definitely helped when trying to think of a name. I asked everyone for input: my mom, grandmother, cousin. I collected all the ideas and made a list. Let's Get Preppy stood out. I knew at that moment that was it! Some bloggers say they don't like their blog names anymore, but I truly love mine!

2.) Who is your fashion inspiration?
My fashion inspiration can come from anywhere and everywhere! Whether it's a picture of an outfit on Pinterest or a scroll through my Instagram feed, I always find cute ideas for to what to wear. Three people who definitely inspire me are Abby from Belle of the Ball, Bess from Belles in Bows, and Carly from The College Prepster. If I am ever in need of inspiration, I always scroll through their blogs or Instagram accounts and can find inspiration very quickly.

3.) If you could chose any one store to shop at your entire life, what store would you have to chose?
This question is very difficult! My favorite stores are Lilly Pulitzer, Vineyard Vines, and J. Crew. But, if I could only choose one I would say J. Crew. They have a great classic look and such variety and colors that I would feel content shopping there for the rest of my days!

4.) What are your favorite boutiques?
Around me, there are not too many boutiques. The ones I love that are relatively close to me are Heads Up Boutique and Country Classics. They both carry most of my favorite brands, which I love since there currently are no Vineyard Vines or Lilly Pulitzer stores close to where I live. When I travel, I love to do a little research beforehand to see if there are any boutiques near where I am headed. I visited Coastal Urge and The Pink Cabana when I was in Myrtle Beach and The Pink Paddock when I was in Albany. They were all so fun to visit and I would definitely go back to each one if/when I travel to these locations again.

5,) How would you describe your style?
I would definitely describe my style as preppy, classic, and girly.

6.) What's your favorite candy?
I love Kit Kats (especially the mini ones!) and Twix. Anything chocolate is my weakness!

7.) What is your favorite social media site?
Another tricky question! I'd have to say Instagram; I love taking and posting pictures, and I have crossed paths with so many people through it. I usually post at least once a day and I love to see what others share too.

8.) What is your favorite movie?
Breakfast at TIffany's has always been my favorite, but any Audrey Hepburn film is a close second!

9.) What is your go-to winter outfit?
In the winter, you'll almost always find me in layers. My obsession with vests is no secret. On a chilly morning, I'll most likely wear one with a sweater with an oxford layered underneath. Jeans and Bean boots always go well with this combo!

10.) What is your daily arm-candy?
My wrist usually sports my KJP pearl bracelet, Kate Spade bow bangle, and sometimes a watch. I like to keep things pretty simple!

11.) What do you love most about blogging!
Ah, there are way too many answers to this questions! I absolutely love being able to share my style, aspects of my lifestyle, and using writing as a creative outlet in my rather hectic schedule. I wasn't totally positive what life as a blogger would really be like in the sense that I didn't know the community I was stepping into. I'm amazed at how many people I have crossed paths with and how much fun it is to just blog. Blogging is truly a unique experience, and even though I'm still trying to find my place in the blogging world, I'm enjoying every moment getting there!
My Eleven Questions for the nominees:
1.) What inspired you to start your blog?
2.) In one word, how would you describe your style?
3.) Do you prefer dressing for the summertime or wintertime? Why?
4.) Where do you find fashion inspiration?
5.) What's one item of clothing you wear all year and couldn't live without?
6.) What planner/agenda do you use?
7.) How do you come up with creative posts?
8.) What is your favorite thing to do on a Saturday morning?
9.) Do you prefer sweet or salty types of food?
10.) Do you have a favorite TV show? If so, what is it?
11.) What is your favorite aspect of blogging?

Madison from Monogrammed Madison
Abigail from For The Love Of It
Raquel and Rose from The Preppy Sisters
Julie from Pinky and the Prep
Julia from J.D. Style
Gracie from Gracie In Prep

Crazy for Cowl

With subzero temperatures and wind chills in the -40°s (just thinking about it makes me shiver), I have been living in sweaters. While I haven't been at school the past two days, I have been getting a lot of work done in order to prepare for finals next week. I could stay in my pjs all day, but in order to focus a bit more I have been opting for casual and comfortable sweaters.

Vineyard Vines is the king of softness and this cowl neck sweater is without a doubt the softest one I own. It's so warm, and the pink has me thinking spring and warm temperatures. It's so easy to wear by itself and still feel put together. I've been pairing it with jeans and riding boots and have received a plethora of compliments. Simple jewelry like my monogram necklace and my KJP bracelet are the perfect touch.

What are you wearing to keep warm during this polar vortex?

Thanks for the pictures, Katie!

Stay warm! xoxo,
